Originating in the west-Indian state of Gujarat, Garba is a dance art form that is widely performed during the Navratri festival that celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. It is said that this Indian dance form is a mock dramatization of the nine-day battle, where people come together as communities and worship the nine forms of goddess Durga. Devotees observe fasts, perform pooja, and dress according to specific colours associated with each of the nine days, with the resultant notion of purifying oneself of negative thoughts and starting life afresh after all the vibrant, colourful festivities.
